about

Attributed to Venantius Fortunatus (530-609), and commissioned by Frankish Queen Radegunda to commemorate the arrival of a relic of the True Cross presented by the Emperor Justin II and Empress Sophia.

Liturgical Use: Vespers hymn from Passion Sunday to Wednesday of Holy Week. It is also the Vespers hymn on the Feast of the Finding (May 3) and of the Exaltation (Sept. 14) of the Holy Cross. The Vexilla Regis was originally intended as a Processional Hymn, and it is still used on Good Friday, when the Blessed Sacrament is carried from the Repository to the High Altar.

Verses 2, 4, and 7 are omitted when the hymn is used liturgically. The last two verses which form the concluding doxology are not by Fortunatus, but were added at a later date.

Graduale Romanum (1908) gives only the ancient form of the hymn, while the Antiphonary (2012) gives only the revised form. The Processionale (1911) gives both forms.

lyrics

(version from the Roman Breviary, which include changes made by Pope Urban VIII in 1632)

Regis prodeunt:
fulget Crucis mysterium,
qua vita mortem pertulit
et morte vitam protulit

Quae vulnerata lanceae
Mucrone diro criminum
ut nos lavaret sordibus
manavit unda et sanguine.

Impleta sunt quae concinit
David fideli carmine,
dicendo nationibus:
regnavit a ligno Deus.

Arbor decora et fulgida,
ornata Regis purpura,
electa digno stipite
tam sancta membra tangere.

Beata, cuius brachiis
pretium pependit saeculi:
statera facta corporis,
tulitque praedam tartari.

O Crux ave, spes unica,
hoc Passionis tempore!
piis adauge gratiam,
reis que dele crimina.

Te, fons salutis Trinitas,
collaudet omnis spiritus:
quibus Crucis victoriamla
rgiris, adde praemium. Amen.
