To aske for all thy love and thy whole heart t’were madnesse, I doe not sue, nor can admit, fairest, from you to have all, yet who giveth all hath nothing to impart but sadnesse. He that receiveth all can have no more then seeing. My Love by length of every houre, Gathers new strength, new growth, new flower. You must have daily new rewards in store, still being. You cannot every day give me your heart for merit: Yet if you will, when yours doth goe, You shall have still one to bestow: For you shall mine when yours doth hence depart inherit. Yet if you please, Ile finde a better way then change them: For so alone dearest, we shall Be one and one anothers all - Let us so joyne our hearts that nothing may estrange them. -poetry adapted from “Love’s Infiniteness”, by John Donne (1572-1631)
To my loving Country-man Mr. Iohn Forster the younger, Merchant of Dublin in Ireland. From silent night, true register of moanes, From saddest Soule consumde with deepest sinnes, From hart quite rent with sighes and heavie groanes, My wayling Muse her wofull worke beginnes. And to the world brings tunes of sad despaire, Sounding nought else but sorrow, griefe and care. If any eye therefore can spare a teare To fill the well-spring that must wet my cheekes, O let that eye to this sad feast draw neere, Refuse me not my humble soule beseekes : For all the teares mine eyes have ever wept Were now too little had they all beene kept.

Dowland's last book of songs includes some of the finest, most sensitively wrought music for lute and voice in any language, and certainly represents the pinnacle of the English lute song. Dowland, who identified himself as “Jo: Dolandi de Lachrimae”, advanced a musical persona that was strongly linked with Elizabethan melancholy, and the familiar ‘Lachrimae' falling tear motif is found hidden somewhere in the texture of nearly every song on this recording. The notable feature of intricate writing for obbligato treble viol on three songs makes A Pilgrimes Solace a groundbreaking publication, despite the contemporary claim that Dowland's music was outdated.

When we first began our collaborative concentration on music for voice and lute, some of the very first repertoire we performed included part-songs from A Pilgrimes Solace. Published in 1612, music from this book is a capstone of Dowland's output; a mature artistic summation of one of the greatest composers of English song. Now entering our tenth year as a duo, we return to this music with a mature appreciation for the texts Dowland selected and a deeper understanding of his compositional skill.

A Pilgrimes Solace also includes the earliest published example of English song scored for voice, lute and independent obbligato instrumental parts, and we are are delighted have have been joined on this project by two sensitive instrumentalists, guest artists Alex Korolov and Alexander Rakov on treble & bass viols.
