This lovely Basque folk hymn, based on the 13th century Latin hymn 'Angelus Ad Virginem', quotes the biblical account of the Annunciation (Luke, Chapter 1, verses 26–38) and Mary's Magnificat (Luke 1.46–55).

The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
with wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame.
"All hail to thee, O lowly maiden Mary,
most highly favoured lady
Gloria!"
"For know a blessèd Mother thou shalt be.
All generations laud and honour thee.
Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold
Most highly favoured lady:
Gloria!"
Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head,
"To me be as it pleaseth God," she said,
"My soul shall laud and magnify God's holy name."

Of her, Emmanuel the Christ was born
in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn.
