about

Sitivit Anima Mea, the secunda pars of Sicut Cervus, is a setting of Psalm 42, by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1526 - 1594). This is an evocative arrangement for solo voice and lute of the beloved four-part motet.

Filled with longing and hope, this is the Tract sung for the procession to the baptismal font during the Holy Saturday vigil. The 16th century faithful would have also associated this text with the Requiem or the All Souls' Mass.

lyrics

Sitivit anima mea ad Deum fortem vivum:
quando veniam et apparebo ante faciem Dei?
Fuerunt mihi lacrymae meae panes die ac nocte,
dum dicitur mihi quotidie:
Ubi est Deus tuus?

My soul has thirsted for the living God:
When shall I come and appear before the face of my God?
My tears have been my bread by day and by night,
While it is said to me daily:
Where is your God?
