about

by Luca Marenzio (1553 – 1599)

Marenzio’s four-part madrigal, ‘Piango che Amor‘ (1588) ends with a falling tear motif in the final notes of the cantus line, set to the word, pianto (weeping), which may have been an inspiration for John Dowland's famous 'Lachrimae' theme. Mignarda's performance is a unique arrangement that assigns Marenzio's lower three voice parts for lute.
