Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548 – 1611)

O magnum mysterium is the Responsory following the 4th Lesson of the II Nocturn of Matins for Christmas Day. Victoria's O magnum mysterium, beloved and virtually ubiquitous in its four-voice setting, is a perfect model for intabulation with subtle divisions on the lute substituted for sustained vocal lines.

O magnum mysterium
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
jacentem in præsepio.
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt
Portare Dominum Jesum Christum.

O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord,
lying in a manger.
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy
To bear Jesus Christ the Lord.

from Magnum Mysterium: Advent & Christmas music for lute & voice, released November 1, 2016
Performed live by Mignarda; Donna Stewart, voice and Ron Andrico, lute.
Arranged from original source by Ron Andrico Mignarda Editions
