This piece is drawn from the Buxheimer Orgelbuch, a late 15th-century source of music in keyboard tablature. The collection has close associations with Conrad Paumann, who is credited with the invention of keyboard and lute tablature as a convenient method of scoring music that was otherwise only accessible by reading separate part books. Since Paumann was known as a organist and a lutenist, it is no wonder that much of the music from this collection is quite playable on either instrument.
