In darkness let me dwell, John Dowland (c. 1563 – 1626)
John Dowland's biographer Diana Poulton wrote, “This astonishingly lovely song stands among the greatest ever written in the English language.” We agree. Dowland employed all his best musical devices to express the depths of gloom and despair in this declamatory Italianate song. The source of his text was very likely Giovanni Coprario’s (John Cooper putting on airs) 1606 setting of the same poetry that includes a second verse not set by Dowland.

The roofe Dispaire to barre
all cheerfull light from mee,
The wals of marble blacke
that moistened still shall weepe,
