"Dump" is an archaic term that was typically used to describe a reverie or a dream, and the term was appropriated for the title of several sets of variations in Elizabethan lute and keyboard manuscripts. This set of anonymous lute variations on a tonic-dominant ground is from a lute manuscript from the library of Archbishop Narcissus Marsh (Ms. Z.3.2.13, p. 426-428), Dublin circa 1580, and the piece has nothing whatsoever to do with Philip van Wilder as is sometimes claimed.

Rather than affecting a speedy banjo-like delivery, as some do, this live performance is taken at at more appropriately dreamy tempo, and is recorded here for the first time with proper corrections to the errors as found in the manuscript source.
