De tous biens plaine was an immensely popular chanson that received wide distribution in the late fifteenth century. As David J. Rothenberg has demonstrated in The Flower of Paradise: Marian Devotion and Secular Song in Medieval and Renaissance Music, De tous biens plaine was not a "courtly love" song but rather a devotional song dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Capirola's arrangement for solo lute decorates the three-voice original with examples of notated finger ornaments, cadential flourishes and triplet passages to amplify the spirit of the vocal original.
