Author of light, Thomas Campion (1567 –1620)
“Author of light” takes pride of place as the first ayre in Campion’s Two Bookes of Ayres, undated but probably published in 1613. The melodically pleasing devotional ayre strikes a balance between meditative and dramatic, with sparse, rhythmically free continuo style accompaniment that ably serves the word setting. The final line with its building chromaticism is particularly effective.
