about

Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548 – 1611)

One of the four Marian Antiphons (Alma Redemptoris Mater, Ave Regina cælorum, Regina cæli, Salve Regina), the chant, Alma Redemptoris Mater is credited to Hermanus Contractus (1013 – 1054), and is sung at the close of the day. Proper from the first Sunday in Advent until the Feast of the Purification (February 2).

Our arrangement of this five-voice motet displays Victoria's gift for beautiful melodic lines as they emerge and intermingle.

lyrics

Alma Redemptoris Mater,
quae pervia cæli porta manes,
et stella maris, succurre cadenti,
surgere qui curat, populo:
Tu quæ genuisti, natura mirante,
tuum sanctum Genitorem,
Virgo prius ac posterius,
Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud Ave,
peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,
the portal to heaven, star of the sea,
Assist your people who have fallen
yet strive to rise again.
You who bore your Creator
to the wonderment of nature,
Yet remained a virgin after as before.
You who received Gabriel's joyful greeting,
have pity on us poor sinners.
