Let’s go, my dear, and see whether the rose Which this morning uncovered its purple garment to the sun has now at evening lost any of the folds of that garment, or any of its color that resembles your own. But see, alas! How in so brief a time, My dear, the rose has let fall Its beauties upon the ground. Nature is truly a wicked stepmother If such a flower lasts only From morning till night. So then, my dear, if you believe me: While your time of life is in bloom In its freshest green, Go and harvest your youth; For as with this flower, old age Will wither your beauty.

If ever my wounded soul Had thoughts for anyone but you, I should, for punishment, Be deprived of all contentment. If ever the love of another lady Torches my heart with its flame, May I suffer the rigors Of all sorts of misery. If ever time or absence Should shake my constancy, May I, without succor, Languish the rest of my days. In short, be cruel to me for all my days, As you now seem beautiful to me, If I fail to match your beauty With love and fidelity.

Divine Amaryllis, Your brown complexion puts lilies to shame. Your grace is admirable. But your virtue surpasses your beauty. Under heaven there is nothing to compare, Except my fidelity. Your charms are likewise, Your eyes – which they rightly call suns - Have a like brilliance But your virtue surpasses your beauty. Under heaven there is nothing to compare, Except my fidelity. Beautiful star of mortals! The heavens do not envy your altars, For are you not to be worshiped? And your virtue, which surpasses your beauty, Sees nothing comparable to itself Except my fidelity.

Cease with your sighing, mortals, This loveliness is not earthly: Adoring her is granted But not loving her, Only the gods Can love so sublimely, It would be senseless For anyone aspiring to happiness, If wounded by these lovely eyes, To reveal his suffering, For only the gods Can love so sublimely. In short, these divine qualities with which the heavens adorned her birth, prevent even the gods, not from loving her, but the hope of obtaining, through loving her, nothing more than a glorious torment.

Although cruel suffering makes me die slowly and painfully and the more I sigh, the more my pain increases, The cause of this is so beautiful, that suffering death a hundred times for her I would not complain. All the ills which cause my spirit to be in turmoil are but proof of my fidelity. Of which the cause is so beautiful, that suffering death a hundred times for her I would not complain. I have this advantage over other lovers: That my heart is never dismayed by its torments. For the cause of this is so beautiful, that suffering death a hundred times for her I would not complain.

*** The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. He shall feed me in a green pasture: and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul: and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff comfort me Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me: Thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full. But Thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

about

A selection of the haunting and lovely tunes of the early 17th century French court known as airs de cour. These songs were the pop music of their day, and their poetic themes dwell upon one of three subjects: unrequited love, the sometimes inexplicable interactions of mythological deities, or idyllic scenes of nymphs and shepherds. We add to the mix a few psalm settings that would have been sung and played for private domestic entertainment 400 years ago.

Winner, Best Classical/Vocal Album, JPF Awards, this music has proven particularly accessible to modern audiences, and many people have told us that it conjures a moment of serenity in their otherwise hectic lives. Also selected by Cleveland classical radio station WCLV as a Choice CD.
