Veni, Veni Emmanuel! Captivum solve Israel! Qui gemit in exsilio, Privatus Dei Filio. Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel Nascetur pro te, Israel. Veni, Veni O Oriens! Solare nos adveniens, Noctis depelle nebulas, Dirasque noctis tenebras. Gaude, gaude… Veni, Veni Adonai! Qui populo in Sinai Legem dedisti vertice, In Majestate gloriae. Gaude, gaude… Come, Emanuel, Set free the captive Israel Lamenting in exile, Deprived of the son of God. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emanuel shall be born to you, O Israel. Come, radiant dawn, Bring us solace. Dispel the mists and the Fearful shadows of the night Rejoice! Rejoice... Come, Lord God, who gave the law to your people on Sinai's summit in glorious majesty. Rejoice! Rejoice... (English translation by Donna Stewart)

The angel Gabriel from heaven came, with wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame. "All hail to thee, O lowly maiden Mary, most highly favoured lady Gloria!" "For know a blessèd Mother thou shalt be. All generations laud and honour thee. Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold Most highly favoured lady: Gloria!" Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, "To me be as it pleaseth God," she said, "My soul shall laud and magnify God's holy name." Most highly favoured lady: Gloria! Of her, Emmanuel the Christ was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn. And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say Most highly favoured lady: Gloria!

Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor in the house of the Lord. Behold, you shall conceive and bring forth a son, and he shall be called Son of the most High.

Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood, he will give to all the faithful his own self for heav'nly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the pow'rs of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At his feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim, with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, "Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Lord Most High!"

A rose has sprung up from a tender root. As the old ones sang to us, its lineage was from Jesse. And it has brought forth a floweret in the midst of the cold winter; At deepest midnight hour. The rosebud that I mean, of which Isaiah told, Is Mary, the pure, who brought us the floweret. At God’s immortal word, she has borne a child Who makes us blessed. The floweret so small, that smells so sweet to us With its clear light dispels the darkness. True man and true God, helping us through all suffering, He saves us from sin and death.

Good people all, this Christmas time, Consider well and bear in mind What our good God for us has done In sending his beloved son With Mary holy we should pray, To God with love this Christmas Day In Bethlehem upon that morn, There was a blessed Messiah born. The night before that happy tide, The noble Virgin and her guide Were long time seeking up and down To find a lodging in the town. But mark how all things came to pass From every door repelled, alas, As was foretold, their refuge all Was but a humble ox's stall. Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep Their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep To whom God's angels did appear Which put the shepherds in great fear Prepare and go, the angels said To Bethlehem, be not afraid For there you'll find, this happy morn A princely babe, sweet Jesus, born. With thankful heart and joyful mind The shepherds went the babe to find And as God's angel had foretold They did our Saviour Christ behold Within a manger he was laid And by his side the virgin maid Attending on the Lord of Life Who came on earth to end all strife.

My love, my pride, my treasure, O My wonder new and pleasure, O My son, my beauty, ever You Who am I to bear You here? The cause of talk and tale am I The cause of greatest fame am I The cause of proudest care on high To have for mine, the king of all And though You are the king of all They sent You to the manger stall Where at Your feet they all shall fall And glorify my child the king There shone a star above three kings, To guide them to the king of kings. They held You in their humble arms And knelt before You until dawn. They gave You myrrh they gave You gold Frankincense and gifts untold They traveled far these gifts to bring, And glorify their newborn king. My love, my pride, my treasure, O My wonder new and pleasure, O My son, my beauty, ever You Who am I to bear You here?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind ? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne ? For auld lang syne, my jo, for auld lang syne, we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp ! and surely I’ll be mine ! And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. For auld lang syne, my jo... We twa hae run about the braes, and pu’d the gowans fine ; But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit, sin auld lang syne. For auld lang syne, my jo... We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn, frae morning sun till dine ; But seas between us braid hae roar’d sin auld lang syne. For auld lang syne, my jo... And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere ! and gie's a hand o’ thine ! And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught, for auld lang syne. For auld lang syne, my jo...

about

Released in 2008, this very personal selection of music for Advent and Christmastide represents many traditions ranging from the 12th to the 18th centuries. Featuring our own arrangements for lute and voice of many familiar and traditional English, Irish, French, and German carols, juxtaposed with a few favorite Latin motets, Scots tunes, and one Italian lauda set to a very special poem by Petrarch. Recorded in the aftermath of a very difficult time, Duo Seraphim is dedicated with gratitude to our many friends and supporters in the hope that it may brighten the spirit of the season for years to come.

Richard Banks at Christmascdreviews.com says:
"...As a jaded and sated holiday listener, I am drawn to anything lacking in kitsch, and there is nothing I've heard this season further from the manufactured art of American Christmas than Duo Seraphim. Surely, this is listening to holiday music without listening to "holiday music"...There are a lot of ways to get at the holiday spirit; Duo Seraphim has chosen the road less traveled, putting together a unique and substantial collection of latinesque works, adorned only with voice and lute."
